Goondiwindi will see the return of a local fishing competition this month. And going by the feedback and support for the event, residents couldn't be happier.

The comp will be held next Saturday (January 23) and is open to everyone but with the aim to lure youth.

The entry fee is $20 (14 and under free) with $5 being donated to Care Goondiwindi. Sign-on is from 5am at the town park running until 5pm. It is a catch and release event. Each angler will be given a number and must photograph their fish, including measurement, with this for an entry.

Categories include the largest Murray cod and yellow belly. Children will be hoping to reel in the longest fish (of any type) with the winner taking home a kayak. There will be random draws for kids too, with another kayak up from grabs, meaning anyone who enters has the chance to win, fish or no fish.

Organiser, Brett Stanbury, said there's some great prizes to be won including cash, fishing gear, gift vouchers. "It's going to be a great day and we've been amazed by how many people want to jump on board. We knew we'd get a few bites but there has been a lot of interest. Locals have really come on board with donations and people from all over to participate," Stanbury said. "It should be a great boost to the community."
