Goondiwindi's Darryl McGrady has been named the Brisbane Apprentice of the Year at the annual HIA awards.

DJ started work with RJ Hanna Constructions two years ago as a school-based apprentice with aspirations to join the construction industry.

"He grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has developed a real passion for building," Lisa Hanna said.

"DJ finished school with many awards including school-based apprentice of the year and has gone on to be a strong member of the RJ Hanna Constructions team.

"He is now a mentor of the academy he was a part of at High School, The Clontarf Academy, a fantastic organisation working with indiginous students at GSHS. I was lucky enough to be invited with him as a guest speaker to an employment forum and saw not only how important this academy is but overall what a great role model DJ is," Lisa said.

"DJ is a mentor not just at the academy but to our other apprentices and community," she said.

"We are super proud of Darryl and his efforts. He is a very worthy winner. To be nominated and to win this prestigious award is a great achievement for both DJ and RJ Hanna Constructions. We can't wait to see what is next."
