A young Rabbitohs fan got to meet one of his idols last week.

Athol Hickling received the surprise of a lifetime when he was able to attend the Rabbitohs' first training run for 2020 at Redfern Oval.

Hickling will celebrate his 13th birthday tomorrow so Mum, Emily Hippi-Stacey wanted to treat him. "We were at Newcastle on holidays and decided to stay a couple of extra days and go to Sydney to see the training but we kept it a secret from Athol. We wanted to do something exciting considering he's turning a teen this week," she said.

"As we were walking across the crossing near the oval we could see them and I said, look over there. When he saw them, he couldn't believe his eyes."

Stacey said it was a "very special moment" getting to meet Goondiwindi's Ethan Lowe. "I live in Muli Muli but when I told him I came from Toomelah we couldn't get rid of him. He's a true champ," she said.

"My son was so happy to meet him, get his shirt signed and a photo with him. He's a true gentleman. He's got my love and respect."
