The 2019 Excellence awards for Engineering solutions for Queensland communities was held by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia at their annual state conference in Brisbane on October 23.

In the category for projects valued between $1m and $2m the Goondiwindi Regional Council was nominated for a project that involved restoration work at 10 locations on the town levee bank. The restoration work was necessary due to the impact of floods over a number of years. Engineers from the Goondiwindi Regional Council working in collaboration with staff from Goondiwindi's Proterra Group constructed a number of rock-retaining walls designed to protect the integrity of the levee bank and thus protecting vital infrastructure and residential properties along the MacIntyre River.

The Goondiwindi Regional Council Engineering Department and the Proterra Group took out this prestigious award. Judges were required to consider planning, innovation, stakeholder engagement, environmental impacts and management.
