Junior rugby league kicks off with trial matches between Goondiwindi and Moree

The junior Goondiwindi Boars hosted Moree for its first lot of trial matches in 2019.

Junior boys teams from under sevens to under 16s played their first matches of the year, as well as two combined league tag games, played by girls up to 17 years of age.

Goondiwindi got wins in the under 16s and under 14s matches, with scores of 26-0 and 14-10, respectively.

Moree proved too strong in the under 12s, with wins of 22-18 and 20-16, and in the league tag with a 12-10 win.

In the under 8s, Moree won the first game by 20-8 and the second game was a 20-20 draw.

"It was a great day, really well supported," Goondiwindi Junior Rugby League Club president Alison Bishop said.

"We have record registration numbers. Over 200 kids have signed up and enrolled."

After a long off season, Bishop said the juniors were incredibly excited to get back out on the field.

"It was really well attended. I had two of my kids in it and they were pumped," she said.

"Everyone was very keen to get back into it."

The juniors will continue to work closely with the senior club, with plans for the senior players to run a number of activities for all the children.

The juniors will also have an opportunity get involved in senior game days by playing at half time or even opening the day with a game.

Moree Junior Rugby League president Brett Brazel reiterated Bishop's comments, saying it was a great day for all involved.

"This is an annual thing we try and do with Gundy," he said.

"So our competition will actually start next week, but this was just a friendly between Moree and Gundy that's been going on for a number of years.

"Unfortunately it clashed with a cricket grand final, so we were down on a few numbers, but they all fielded a team and they all seemed to enjoy it."

Brazel said all the club is looking strong for the season to start, with around 240 players registered.

Their season begins with a gala day in Glen Innes on March 31.

"We've got a new committee and some new coaches that have come on board, putting their hand up and helping out," Brazel said.

"New jerseys, few new sponsors, it's all come together."

Goondiwindi have another trial day set against Pittsworth for March 30, with the regular season beginning on April 27.
