Saturday saw the Goondiwindi Hawks host the Cardinal Cup, an annual, pre-season, round robin event.

Last year Goondiwindi were lucky enough to win the Cup making it  our turn to host.

Because some teams couldn’t make the journey this year, Goondiwindi fielded an “A” and “B” team to play Warwick and Jimboomba.

It was a very hot day with the first game being played at 10am between Goondiwindi A and Jimboomba, with Goondiwindi coming out on top.

During the day the B grade boys, some of whom had never played AFL before, played back to back games and "never saying die". At half time between the As and Bs the Bs had their nose in front, much to the delight of the traveling teams and local supporters alike.

In the end the As prevailed but not without its personal losses as the heat and high work rate began to pay a toll on the Hawks' numbers.

Most players played four plus games and it showed.

The final was played between the undefeated As and an experienced and less injured Jimboomba side whose big men weren’t there just to make up numbers.

It was a physical encounter with Jimboomba being just too good in the end.

Gundy A made it through to the grand final.

The Gundy boys never gave up, being led by Brent “Axe” Townsend, Jeremy “Jezza” Leahy, Dave “Tazzy” O’Toole and Tyson “Get out of my way” Hagiel, just to name a few.

The boys kept coming and the opposition knew to keep the ball moving or cop some Hawks muscle. Special mention also to Hayden Everingham, Karl Tomkins and Jeremy Cox (all of whom were first time players) Bailey Soper (best B grade) and Jayden Hill who turned 16 on the day and had a cracker.

It was also co-coach Scott Greg’s first hit out and everyone sees the experience he brings to the club. Greg is going to be instrumental in bringing the 2019 flag back to the Hawks' Nest.

The Hawks would like to thank the traveling teams, umpires, goalies, linesmen, water boys, runners, trainers, score/time keepers, canteen volunteers and supporters and especially the ladies who volunteered to keep the guys 'loosened-up' for the day, massage therapists, Kym Skinner - Bowen and Massage, Carol Wood- Relax4 Massage and Bowen and Bianka Stork - Bee Calm Massage. Without the help from these ladies the lads couldn’t have done what they did, so thank you.

Remember the Hawks have their “Paddock Prelude” on Saturday 23 at Riddles Oval from 6pm - a cocktail party with locals supplying the catering and entertainment. Call Erinn on 0432 820 321 for RSVPs.
