Gundy's festival of food and good times attracts thousands

Gourmet in Gundy has lived up to all the expectations and then some.

Thousands poured into town for the annual celebration of food, wine, beer and good times over the weekend, beginning with a black-tie cocktail party at the Community Centre on Friday night and the Goondiwid Junior Golf Classic welcome at the Golf Club.

Out at the Goondiwindi Gun Club members were gearing up for the annual two-day shoot.

On Saturday the hard part was working out where to go and what to do.

Celebrity cook Georgia Barnes conducted a cooking class, the Goondiwindi Races attracted a near-record crowd, the Goondiwindi Boars hosted the junior rugby league grand finals for Warwick and District, some of  the State’s best young golfers teed off in the Classic, the Gun Club hosted its annual camp-oven dinner, the Townhouse Restaurant put on a tapas evening, and Georgia was hard at work again in the evening cooking dinner for ten after she was “auctioned off” at the cocktail party the previous evening.

And then there was the big day.

The came from Leongapha in Victoria to the Sunshine Coast, from Brisbane to Wandoan to Kingaroy and they all helped make his year’s Gourmet the biggest since Goondiwindi Rotary took over the event four years ago and one of the biggest in the past decade.

Food ranged from the best lamb in Qeensland (Yes we are biased) which was provided by local producers “Karbullah” to satay sticks and pad thai from Nina and the crew from Goulburn Thai from Armidale.  Peter Birch from Moree and Luke Fing from Goondiwindi (B&W Rural) slaved over a giant paella pan helping raise money for Lifeline.

Michelle Kearney and  the Rotary girls pulled-pork burgers attracted a cult following while wineries from throughout the region and Apex Beer Fest tent made sure no-one went thirsty. And, of course, there was much, much more.

One of Queensland’s hardest working entertainers, and former Goondiwindi boy, Will Day and the Will Day band set the background for one of Goondiwindi’s red-letter social events.
