The mighty Boars show plenty of fight in nailbiting victory

Some powerhouse defence paved the way for a big win for the Boars. In this case Brad Frost and Hugh Wilkes get the job done.

The Boars snuck home with a 24 to 20 win over Brothers on Sunday with Ronnie David scoring the match winner with 50 seconds left on the clock.

With a mistake-riddled game from both teams, it was Brothers who looked the better team in the first half. The leprechauns opened up the scoring but Goondiwindi hit back with Ronnie David crossing for a try out wide.

No team was able to make any real ground with penalties and handling errors costing both teams. On the back of penalties Brothers were able to run in two tries. On the stroke of half time a backline move saw Josh Keoller score to keep the Boars in touch.

The intensity picked up in the second half with both teams desperate for the two points. The dangerous Mal McGrady threatened to break the game open as he constantly tormented defenders with his pace. Josh Keoller went over for his second try and Brandon McGrady beat several defenders to score beside the posts and lock the scores up at 18-all. The Boars couldn’t land the killer blow as too many errors stifled their attack. Then with time ticking down a penalty saw Brothers take the two point conversion and lead. Levi Wilson had an excellent game at hooker and lead the Boars down the length of the field with two minutes remaining. Ronnie David crashed over from dummy half with a clutch try to steal a win.

The Reggies got off to a flyer with a good team performance. Tom Andersen and Kyle Munro were superb. A set play saw the versatile Hayden Bussell cross over for the first points of the match. Tom Fitzgerald, Michael Lynn and Buster Wilson all crossed in quick succession.

The try scoring bonanza continued in the first half when Derrick Craigie gathered a chip kick and put Kyle Munro over and within a few minutes Derrick put Davey Armstrong down the side line to score. The Boars went to sleep again allowing Brothers back in the game. Jake McCosker and Hayden Everingham, making his comeback, were busy, providing good go forward. On the back of possession Brad frost and Hugh Wilkes crossed for tries. The last play of the game saw Tom Fitzgerald put Davey Armstrong through a gap from a scrum to score his second try.
