Plenty of reasons to keep cheering for Ef Troop.

The fun times have only just begun for Ef Troop and its local connections.

The Magic Millions on the Gold Coast on Saturday may have been a chaotic affair but one thing stands out: Ef Troop is a horse to watch. Come race day and the big money arrived for Sunlight.

EF Troop was third favourite and connections and trainer told jockey Matt McGillivray to lead.

This would mean he would have to be fired up early and use up a bit of petrol to try and get across to the rail.  The starter hit the button and Matt stoked him up and quickly charged across causing interference to runners on his inside which then saw a chain reaction through the field.

Ef Troop is causing plenty of excitement for racing fans.

After the race Matt was charged with causing severe interference and copped one month suspension. This incident would have fired Ef Troop up and with young horses it can be “Fight or Flight”.

The youngster took off and as one scribe described it carved out a suicidal first 600 metres in 33.6 secs which normally would see then drop out on the turn and finish at the tail of the field. Yet Ef Troop was still in front half way down the straight and hung on to finish 4th beaten three lengths.

The winner was the brilliant filly Sunlight. There is little doubt though that El Troop will be winning plenty of races and being a Magic Millions horse,  barring bad luck, will be racing for around a million dollar purse every Magic Millions day for the next few years. Connections should strap themselves in for plenty of fun rides into the future.

The Hayes family, Maurice “Cutter” Hayes and his wife Jen have thanked Goondiwindi for all its support.

“Thanks to everyone that supported us with Ef Troop, in our minds he is still a champion and did everything that was asked of him. Regardless of what happened Sunlight was the better horse today and congratulations to the McEvoy camp,” Jen said. Purchased for $70,000 Ef Troop set the tongues wagging from the first time he stepped onto a racetrack. Trainer Daryl Gollan  produced him in a barrier trial at Doomben on the October 31.

He flew the gates and proceeded to demolish the opposition. His sire is the renowned Spirit of Boom.
