Boggabilla farmer Peter Mailler found himself caught up in a near punch-up at Tamworth’s Town Hall on Saturday morning.

The CountryMinded candidate stepped in, in an attempt to defend a Labor campaigner who was being allegedly accosted by a local Barnaby supporter.

“He was fizzy with the Labor campaigners and then he got fizzy with me,” Mr Mailler said. “I kind of got in the middle of it and started challenging what he was saying. “He was carrying on about how great Barnaby is … Barnaby is the only reason Tamworth is booming … the Labor Party is terrible.

“I wouldn’t have gotten physical but he was certainly very agitated.”

Mr Mailler said the man was “very aggressive”. “He was very, very aggressive that Barnaby was the best thing that’s happened to Tamworth and did not like anyone who didn’t agree with him,” he said.

“It was pretty unnecessary but he left not long after, which was good.”

It’s history now that Barnaby Joyce was re-elected with an increased majority.
