Skygazers will be able to enjoy a ‘full cold supermoon’ tonight.
On Sunday, December 3, the moon will be 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than usual in its closer-than-usual approach to the earth.
The moon orbits the earth in an oval rather than circular motion, and for this reason, it is sometimes closer to the Earth than at other times. Tonight will be one of these nights when you feel as though you can reach out and touch it.
This is not the first supermoon of the year, but it is the first that we will be able to enjoy it with the naked eye as it will not be blacked out by a ‘new moon’ stage.
Other names for a supermoon are ‘big spirit moon’ or ‘blue moon’.
The best time to enjoy the Super Full Moon is at moonrise, after 8pm on the east coast of Australia.
