The Goondiwindi Argus seeks poets with beautiful, original poetry to share in $600 prizes

The Goondiwindi Argus is seeking poets with beautiful, original works for the chance to take home a share of $600 in prize money.

Poets from around Australia are being called on to enter our poetry competition being held in conjunction with the Goondiwindi Poetry and Arts Festival, which begins next week.

The poem, or suite of poems, must be 80 lines or less and sent in for our Poetry and Arts Competition by Monday, August 14, at 5pm. Entries will be vying to win a $500 cash prize, courtesy of the Goondiwindi Argus.  One poet from the Goondiwindi region will also be in the running for a $100 cash prize.

The Argus will publish all of the entries and talk with some of the authors about their work as part of the festival coverage. The poems will be judged by the members of the Macintyre Young Writers’ Committee, with the judges’ decision final.

The festival, running from August 14-19,  is a satellite of the Queensland Poetry Festival, and will feature spoken word, storytelling, haiku walks, school workshops, street theatre and music.

“We are very excited about the festival and what it can bring, to not just Goondiwindi but our entire region,” said Wendy Forsyth, the president of the Macintyre Young Writers’ Committee, which is hosting the event.

The Argus is excited about getting on board as a media partner.  “Our vibrant community, which we believe extends from many miles west of those Toobeah silos and back  to Coolmunda Dam and a tight turn right to Texas, continually amazes us with the talents and the interests shown by ‘locals’,” Ian Jones, senior journalist for the Argus, said. “We want to do our bit to add to that wonderful melange. And we hope we can all embrace and support this wonderful event.”

Entries, including your name and contact details, can be mailed to the Goondiwindi Argus, PO Box 284, Goondiwindi, 4390, emailed to or dropped into the newspaper’s offices. Fairfax employees and their immediate families are excluded from taking part in this competition.
