Home-town boy runs on at Origin

One young Goondiwindi rugby league player will have a rare understanding of what it’s like to play for your state during State of Origin.

Why? Because he’ll be running on in the curtain-raiser when the Under 16 state team takes on their NSW counterparts.

Tristan Powell kicked off his football as a six year-old for the under 7 Boars.

He remained part of the club for the next seven years.

But in 2015 while he was in the under 14s he was scouted by the St Mary’s School in Toowoomba.

So his proud mum Darlene made the decision to move.

He was and has been a  regular in rep teams ever since.

This year he was offered a scholarship to Nudgee to play rugby union.

So Darlene  moved back “home”.  But it’s not just schools impressed by his talent. He’s been a part of the Broncos’ elite development program since  he was 12.  When he was 14 they offered him a two-year contract which began when he turned 15. That contract has just been renewed for another year.

A rising star of the rugby league world, Tristan Powell, and he's from Goondiwindi.
