Seething after two straight defeats in two weeks, the Goondiwindi Soccer Roos travelled to Toowoomba looking to get back on track in their quest for the finals.
The sides took to the field with an undermanned Gatton struggling against a bustling Goondiwindi, equipped with 4 substitutes waiting in the wings.
The Roos, contrary to recent weeks, started the better, trying to take advantage of a vulnerable opposition - and it didn't take long, Andrew Spowart struck inside the box to put the Roos 1-0 ahead. And it didn't take long to turn the screw further, Spowart grabbing his second and doubling Goondiwindi’s lead within 22 minutes.
Thirty minutes were on the clock when Marko Backhaus, making only his second appearance, scored a screaming goal, calmly shooting to beat a hapless Gatton goalkeeper.
The Roos led 3-0 at half time, the winning feeling running through their veins like a lightning bolt in a thunderstorm.
Goondiwindi enjoyed their best spell of the game after half time with some great interplay, specifically between Matt Gore and Dom Reif. Brimming with confidence, Gore made it 4-0 converting home a well placed cross from Backhaus.
With the game drawing to a close, the Roos had a momentary lapse In concentration gifting the opposition a route back into the game, 4-1. But, as shown in previous encounters, this Roos side is full of endurance and man-of-the-match Gore epitomised that when he struck home to regain the 4-goal cushion.
Two late Gatton goals tarred a great team performance from Goondiwindi and suggested that they stood a slight chance which in reality was never the case. The Roos will be disappointed to concede such easy goals and will have to steady their defence to be in serious contention for the finals. Overall a great performance from everyone involved.
