Swan to unveil $1b surplus

THE federal government has slashed spending by $4 billion to reach a forecast surplus of $1 billion this financial year, which is $500 million less than forecast at the May budget.

The Treasurer, Wayne Swan, has also tweeted that the forecast surplus for 2015-16, the final year of the four-year forward estimates, will be $6 billion, which is $1.5 billion less than forecast in May.
