The Tarawera Open Tennis tournament enjoyed a fine (if rather warm) day with plenty of nominations, including some from as far away as Julia Creek, on Sunday, September 23.
As always some fantastic tennis was played and spectators were able to appreciate the sportsmanship on and off the courts.
Congratulations to John Hickson and Anna Power who took home the Men’s and Women’s singles champion’s trophies respectively. Talwood locals Cam Kay and Anne Oliver successfully defeated Heath and Sophie Elsley who were last year’s mixed double’s champions.
Anne and Anna combined to defeat mother and daughter team Jane and Sophie Rae and Cam and Dave Whittle were successful in taking home the Men’s Doubles Trophy. As always, those who won and the runners-up, were able to take home some fantastic prizes courtesy of the generosity of Campbell’s Fuel Supplies.
However the biggest winners on the day were the children who were able to play in the newly constructed playground which was made possible through funding received from GrainCorps’ Community Fund. Local GrainCorp representative Wayne Kingston was at the tournament to officially open the playground and it was given the big thumbs up from the kids!
Club President Ewen Beaton acknowledged the generosity of GrainCorp and the Recreation club is aware that without the funding the playground would not have been possible.
