Rain threatened but couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of players at this year’s Billa Billa tennis tournament.
The overcast sky provided perfect conditions for the young and the experienced to test their skills and wills.
There was a blood bath on court one when hard-man Brian Spink and wonder- woman Helen Dimond took on the in-form duo of Steve Burey and Ann Allen.
As is the case with so many elite athletes under extreme pressure, Steve was stricken with a calf strain injury midway through the set.
He was ably replaced by the ‘keep-you-guessing’ game of Ray Allen, however the overpowering tactics of Brian and Helen resulted in another casualty when Anne succumbed to the blood bin.
This was just one of many intense match-ups.
The tournament progressed nicely with focus on the major finals until Nat and Chris Makim turned up with huge jars of lollies which turned the attention to the consolations.
The final results represented a mixture of ages and talent.
It was great to see the young guns coming through.
The ladies’ doubles final was won by Di Selby and Suzie Killen, runner up Ann Allen and Aileen Russell, consolations Paige Burey and Michelle Lahey.
The men’s doubles final was won by Tom Sandow and Lawrence Lahey, runner up Brian Spink and Shane Wolfenden, consolations Leigh Jobling and Tim Beare.
The mixed doubles and prized Ian Woods Memorial Trophy was won by Tom Sandow and Amy Kraus, runner up Michelle and Lawrence Lahey, consolations Paige and Jack Burey.
