The Goondiwindi Boars headed off to Toowoomba at the weekend, and having not played football for three weeks, they knew they were on a hiding to nothing against competition front-runners, Valleys.
I'm not interested in what the scoreboard had to say, as it was very lop-sided in all grades. The interest lies in the guts and determination shown by the blokes who made the trip to play in atrocious conditions.
The players who made the trip can well and truly hold their heads up and for those who didn't, you are learning who your mates are and who you can count on when the chips are down.
Unfortunately, no comment can be made on the Under 18 game as the bus ran late as it drove around town chasing players, copping every excuse in the book as to why they could not come with their so-called mates.
For those with genuine excuses, don't forget training this week with a local game on Sunday.
From the senior games on Sunday there was no better than Adam Wilson, the warhorse captain/coach of the Reserve Grade side. Wilso got good support from Peter Vukovich, Adam Rodilossi, Tim Rabbit and Mark Jekyll with the whole team setting an example.
The A Grade side were led up the middle by none better than Brendan Rice who was well-supported by Karl Tomkins and the bloke fast becoming known as Michael "Hitman" Taylor.
Opposition teams are really starting to look for Mick Taylor as he can really put them on their backs with his hard defence.
The little men, Tom Crocker, Matthew Galvin and Jordan Jankins all had big games and to the rest of you, well done.
On the upside, the Boars have a new recruit in Tony Mitchell, who will be taking over the A Grade coaching role.
Tony is a good friend of former Australian representative John Gleeson, who was father of former Boars' coach Terry Gleeson.
Tony has won numerous premierships as a coach and comes highly recommended from many areas. He will also be taking over the management of the Goondiwindi Leagues Club so drop in for cold ale and make yourself known.
June 30 is the cut-off for player registrations, so if you’re not signed up and might be looking for a game before season's end, this is your chance.
On Sunday, the Boars are at home playing the Pittsworth Danes with the first game kicking off at 11.30a.m.
Don't forget training is on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6.30pm.
See you at the footy on Sunday.
