Matildas watlz to grand final win

26 Nov, 2009 10:45 AM
The night was hot and so was the squash on grand final night.

The Matildas maintained their winning form and had a convincing 6-2 win over the Roos to take out the grand final.

Andrew Yates and Nigel Corish were the only two winners for the Roos. Dewayne Wells tried hard for the Roos against Matthew Thomas.

Dewayne was ahead going into game four but then Matthew pulled out his best shots to take games 4 and 5 and the match.

Jim Burdett paid his dues by playing two matches for his team the Roos, Richard Littlewood was in top form on the night and defeated Jim 4 games to 1, Paul McNulty proved to be too experienced for Jim in his next match, but top marks to Jim for his efforts.

The tie between the Wattles and the Emus was a cliff hanger down to the last match played by Geoff Peut and Ryan Golder.

It was a long and tough match, Although Ryan won 4 games to 1, it was a close match with Geoff only 3 points behind 66 to 63.

Anthony Driver and Daniel Wallace had wins for the Emus while Ian Francis, Jamie Taylor and Colin Clarence kept the Wattles in the race. The deciding match was between Bob Jakins (Wattles) and Drew Fox (Emus).

Although playing with an injury Drew put up a tough fight running down every ball. Bob was able to play his best shots and although winning 5 games to nil, this was not an indication of the standard of the match.

Bob’s win, the last match of the contest enabled his team to take out the Best of the Rest.

The Wallabies who were in top position going into week 10 of the competition ended up with the wooden spoon.

The Wallabies and the Jumbucks were head and head throughout the night, with the result coming down to a count on games won, which gave the match to the Wallabies 17 games to 16. Mark O’Donoghue played some good squash to produce a win over Pierce Saunders 3 games to 2, points 69 to 65.

Scot McColl and Rob Tweedy featured in a close contest, Scot winning 3 games to 2, but points were an equal 64. Pip Bagshaw and Jock Littlewood gave each other a good workout, Pip gaining honors 3 games to 2, with only one point the difference 63 to 62.

Congratulations to the winning teams and players. Full results of individual scores etc. will be published next week.

A feature of the squash fixtures just completed was the good spirit and co-operation between players to ensure that all matches played were in a friendly but competitive manner.

Anyone wanting to try out for next year’s fixtures will be welcome on Tuesday nights to play against current players. The Squash Centre is open daily for court hire, bookings to be arranged by calling John or Pieta on 4671 1614.
