Racing Round the Ridges

The decision by race clubs to use their facilities as entertainment centres seemed a great business decision to many. The racing people were warning there could be dire consequences unless some strict rules were put in place.

The worst fears of the horse people were realised at the Australia day concert held at Flemington on Tuesday.

Revellers trying to gate crash the show broke into Mark Kavanagh’s stable complex let 25 fillies out of their stalls and proceeded to chase them around causing several to run into buildings resulting in severe injuries to a number of the thoroughbreds.

Press reports are saying 2 fillies suffered a broken pelvis and were near death.

Rock concerts and racehorses just do not mix. Add fireworks, thumping noise and drunken revellers and you have the conditions to send animals especially highly-strung racehorses into panic mode.

No doubt there will be stricter security enforced after the usual investigation and blame laying but the bottom line is with on course stabling the in thing all over the world does the profit from these shows justify the several millions of dollars of litigation that will undoubtedly be sought through the courts.
