And don’t be surprised if he finds his way up there more than once in the not-too-distant future.
Joel Stahlhut, along with his father Mark and brother Dale, won the Club’s Ambrose Champonship late last year.
However, his winning ways have continued into the new year.
He recently won a Greg Norman Junior Golf Foundation tournament at the Royal Queensland golf course in Brisbane.
And while he says Goondiwindi has a great golf course it did little to prepare him for the 170 bunkers laying in wait around one of the State’s top courses.
“It was like playing on the beach,” his father Mark said, while the greeens were just a “little testing”.
Joel hit 89 off the stick for a 66 net to win the event.
He now qualifies for the Greg Norman Masters at Coolangatta later in the year.
It’s a longway from a decade ago when his father placed right-handed plastic club into his son’s hands.
“We couldn’t find left-handed clubs so he hit the right-handed ones backwards,” Mark said.
Joel and Mark have paid tribute to the efforts of Goondiwindi Club member Paul Lynch who has been conducting an “intro” to golf every Monday from 3.30pm.
Everyone from 6-60 is welcome.
“We meet at the green shed on your left as you drive in,” he said.
“It would be great if we could get some more kids to come along,” Mark said.
