WHEN the Goondiwindi Hawks Aussie Rules U16s team travelled to Rockville for their semi-final they knew it was do or die.
A win would see them make a Grand Final berth; a loss would see their season end.
Despite the loss last week the boys went in with confidence.
They had played Coolaroo once already in the normal season and had run out comfortable winners.
And that confidence wasn’t misplaced. It was a dream start, knocking through three goals in the opening couple of minutes.
The trend continued. They entered the second quarter with a 27-0 lead. Rumour has it Head Coach Tom North, known for his fiery half time speeches, actually cracked a smile in the quarter time talk!
Despite some accuracy issues throughout the rest of the game, the Hawks were dominant.
The Hawks’ defenders worked easily throughout the game, easily repelling most of the Coolaroo attacks, allowing them only three scoring opportunities in the the entire game, and leaving them scoreless in the first half.
All midfielders were classy all day, with plenty of goals coming from them.
One of the highlights of the day was from Tyson Hagiel who plucked the ball straight out of a smart tap from ruckman, Joel Barr.
After a quick handball into space and an easy pick up, he ran to the fifty and booted one of the goals of the day.
Despite a few issues with accuracy, there was no real problem with the Hawks forwards who dominated all day.
The two tall forwards, Matt Brown and Brad Ambrose, kicked seven goals between them while midfielder Michael Langton chipped in with three goals.
The Under 14s that played up were outstanding and never gave in. Many of them helped out on the score board too. They were a credit to the team. The Under 14s included Zac Naismith, Carl Clement, Peter Tribe, Ben Ambrose, Lachlan McGregor and Kingsley Williamson.
The last time a Junior Hawks team was in a Grand Final was way back in 2001. It will be the boys’ biggest game yet and they will be out there, fighting with all their heart, in true Hawks fashion.
The Hawks will play bitter rivals Dalby Swans, the same team that sent them to play Coolaroo.
The game will kick off at around the 12midday at Rockville Park in Toowoomba.
