A flying start to the Pony Club season

10 Feb, 2010 10:26 AM
THE Goondiwindi Pony Club (GPC) had a flying start for 2010 with a jumping school instructed by Dominic Schramm from Toowoomba.

Held over the weekend of January 23 and 24, the riders soldiered through the heat to make some great improvements and enjoy some great jumping action. About 20 riders, including some members from North Star, Yarrill Creek and Tulloona pony clubs, participated in a session in both showjumping and cross country each day.

The GPC aims to have Rally days every 1st and 3rd Sunday, although local horse events sometimes are substituted (e.g. the Goondiwindi Show on the 1st weekend of May). Instructors encourage members to ride at the show and other events, and help them to prepare for this. Throughout the year we hope to include a variety of horse disciplines in our rally days - these will include jumping, dressage, polocrosse, campdrafting and sporting, as well as a trail ride or two. Professional instructors are invited to instruct from time to time, often at a small additional fee. Members not only learn more about riding and horsemanship, but how to care for their horse as well.

Adult and child riders from two-years of age are welcome. GPC is run under PCAQ (Pony Club Association of QLD) rules, and riders must pass a gear check before riding. All of the club instructors instruct on a voluntary basis. Membership fees are $60 for riders and $15 for social members (all child riders require an adult to be a social or riding member). For more information see the PCAQ website at www.pcaq.asn.au or pick up a copy of the Goondiwindi Pony Club Handbook from the Goondiwindi Pet Shop and Saddlery.

Goondiwindi Pony Club is having their first rally day and sign on for 2010 at the Goondiwindi Showgrounds on February 21. Sign on will start at 7.30am, and riding will commence with a gear check at 8.30a.m. A barbecue lunch will be available to finish up with.

Bring a plate for morning tea, and water bottle for riders.
