Who’ll win Cricketer of the Year?

11 Mar, 2010 01:40 PM
WHO will it be?

The Goondiwindi Cricket Association will anounce it’s Cricketer of the Year at its annual presentation dinner at the Goondiwidi Golf Club on Saturday.

Favorites include Railways’ and Goondiwindi captain Andrew Mackenzie, All Whites’ batsman Sam Dight, and Macintyre spinner Chris Devine. But could Yagaburne’s favorite son, Ian Webster be in the ruinning yet again? Allrounder Brendan Rice is never far away while Border’s Kurt Carlyon, All Whites’ Brian Steer and Railways’ Pierce Saunders might be the dark horses while Boomi have a list of players such as Ben Carrigan and Andrew Yates, who have starred more than once.

They may however be undone by a lack of games.

And there are many others who have put their hands up over the year.

Cricket lovers will find out on Saturday when the Association celebrates one of its most succesful seasons.

Goondiwindi was undefeated in the Knox Shield downing Chinchilla in the final.

The team then went on to defeat Lockyer Valley to take out the Slade Shield for the first time under the present system.

“It’s been a top year on the representative level but the local competition has exceded expectations as well,” Goondiwindi Association Secretary Bob Jakins said.“It’s been the closest comp in years.

The only dampener has been the rain.

The first round of finals was cancelled.

Minor Premiers All Whites are to take on Macintyre while Yagburne play Border on Saturday.

“Presentation night is a night for any cricket fan or follower.

“We’d really urge former cricketers and their families to come along and relive some of those old memories as well,” bob said.

Tickets are available from The Argus and from Rabobank.

They are $35.

That will include a meal and a $500 bar tab.

The dinner will be held at the Golf Club from 6.30pm..
