"Deadly" bowling gives young quicks a lesson

"Deadly" bowling gives young quicks a lesson

29 Oct, 2009 10:06 AM
THE Goondiwindi Rep cricket side avenged its hiding at the hands of St. George last year and dished out a flogging of their own on Sunday at the Goondiwindi Golf Club.

Both teams were badly hit by harvest commitments, however St. George fronted with a “put together” side containing only three of their all-conquering Knox Shield championship side from last season.

Goondiwindi won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on a wicket that was a little two-paced from sweating under the covers the night before.

Shaun Brennan and Karl Jackson opened up and in the sixth over Brennan was dismissed, caught behind flashing a cut shot.

This then brought the Jackson brothers together and between them they put on 87 for the second wicket, with Karl eventually out hooking, caught at deep square leg for 60.

A couple of overs later and Scott Jackson joined his brother back in the shed after compiling 43.

This gave St. George a sniff, however skipper Andrew Mackenzie and debutant Mick Maher then smashed the attack to all parts of the ground.

They put on a partnership of 126 in 16 overs and both looked set to notch up triple figures until Mackenzie mis hit a gift and was caught skying the spinner Hill for 76.

His knock included nine fours and two sixes and by the time he departed, St. George were in a world of hurt.

The warm conditions and the amount of boundaries were beginning to take a toll on their attack and after Mick Maher (53) and the quick departure of Chris Devine and Dominic O’Connor, you would have thought that at 7-275 their day couldn’t get much worse. Wrong, along came that man Anthony McGregor who dominated the next couple of partnerships smashing 53 not out including eight boundaries and a sweetly timed six over extra cover that even took the notice of a few golfers hitting off at the 17th tee.

After 50 overs, Goondiwindi had reached an imposing 9-355 and it was virtually game over.

After the lunch break, Goondiwindi skipper Andrew Mackenzie threw the new cherry to the “king”, Anthony McGregor.

Bowling to an attacking field he soon had the St. George camp in disarray.

With only one fielder on the leg side St. George opener Trost chipped one straight to Sam Tweedy fielding in a regulation mid-wicket.

McGregor then went on to give the younger Goondiwindi quickies a pace bowling lesson, bowling with immaculate line and length.

After three overs he the figures of 3-3 and ended his seven-over stint with 3-21 earning him Man-of-the-Match honours.

At the other end though St. George skipper Brett Pechey was dishing out some severe stick to both Sam Tweedy and also Pierce Saunders.

It wasn’t until the introduction of spin with Shaun Brennan 3-23 and Chris Devine 1-31 that the brakes were applied to the scoring rate.

Once Pechey (65) was dismissed, St Geroge’s tail offered little resistance and they were dismissed in the 33rd over for 167.

It was a resounding win by Goondiwindi. Their next rep match will be against Chinchilla in two weeks time on Sunday, November 8, at Goondiwindi and an improvement in the bowling department will be required to match the expected strong Chinchilla line-up.
