A TIE has decided the make-up of this season’s cricket final four.
Needing four off the last over, Border batsman Cameron Vella was run out as he tried to sneak a bye to win the match off the last ball.
It was a corker of a game.
Boomi batted first making 211. Hickson set up the total with a classy 75 while Mark Carrigan, 35, and Corlis, 34 not out, made sure they reached a competitive tally.
Shaun Brennan was the pick of the bowlers, snaring 2-28 off his nine overs.
In reply, Border was doing it easy at 0-67 with the Websters, Michael 34, and Andrew, 25, showing the way.
Boomi hit back picking them both up within an over, however Dom O’Connor and Clayton Smith took the score to 104 in the 21st over.
For Boomi it was just a matter of persistence.
Walker sent Smith (33) back to the grandstand with the score on 134.
He then trapped Dave Whittle (13) when the score was on 148.
He then dealt the major blow when he trapped the big-hitting Kurt Carlyon in front, with the score on 175.
Carlyon had made 31, which included five boundaries.
At the other end Shaun Brennan was doing all he could to weather the storm.
Wise went with the score on 196 and then with victory in sight, Brennan fell to Carrigan after making a gritty 17.
The score was 200 in the 41st over.
The 42nd over was a maiden.
Josh Sullivan and Gary Tyter hit five off the next - 205 in the 43rd.
They took three off the next, while Boomi picked up Sullivan, courtesy of a Corlis caught-and-bowled and with one over to go and one wicket, Border needed four runs to win.
Tyter sent the Border fans into raptures with a three off the first ball - one to win off five.
And then the impossible happened.
Corlis bowled four dot balls.
In desperation Cameron Vella attempted to steal a bye off the last ball, but was run out.
It was a great way to end the season for Boomi who, without doubt, would have threatened if they had made the finals.
ALL Whites has limped to the 2009/10 cricket minor premiership and now take on Macintyre in the major semi on Saturday.
They were trounced by a Yagaburne side desperate to keep their finals’ hopes alive.
It was the most exciting last fixture round in years with five teams fighting it out for three spots with All Whites clear, but only just, on top.
The Association faced the prospect that there could have been a four-way tie, but fate saved them with the end result of Macintyre, Yagaburne and Border-Tarawera joining All Whites in the final four.
Reigning premiers Railways missed out by two points while Boomi was undone by two forfeits which left them four points out of the four.
At Yagaburne a below-strength All Whites batted first making 137 thanks to the inform Sam Dight who rattled up 57. He was supported by Brian Steer 21 and Richard Wunsch who made 24 not out.
Adam Wilson was the pick of the bowlers with 2-20 off nine overs.
Yagaburne did it in a canter with Klowss 32, Peter Jackson, 54, and Ian Webster, 52, making light work of the All Whites’ attack.
At the golf club Railways and Macintyre struggled to get teams on the paddock.
However despite missing play-maker Andrew Mackenzie Railways put themselves in the box-seat when Stuart Brotherton and Terry Gleeson racked up 91 for the first wicket.
Brotherton was looking dangerous until he was picked up by Jai Tillack.
Unlikely batting hero Terry Gleeson kept the innings together, and when rep batting star Mick Maher belted three quick-fire boundaries, Macintyre looked nervous.
However they hit back through allrounder Scott Jackson who picked up the dangerous Maher before removing Pierce saunders and Sam Robinson in quick succession.
Gleeson steadied and was looking so comfortable that McInnes strode out without any pads. Gleeson decided one was perhaps a safer option.
He began with a boundary and Macintyre were on the backfoot again.
At the end of 45 Railways had made 204 with Long making 25 to keep the scoreboard ticking over. But it was nowhere near enough after Macintyre’s top order fired.
Karl Jackson made 40. Stephen Coote made 60. Robbie Smith-Lester made 44 not out and Jarryd Thwaite remained not out 24.
