THE senior sports award is presented to an individual who has excelled in either their chosen sport or a range of sporting activities. This year’s recipient has made significant contributions and achievements as a member of the Goondiwindi Triathlon Club.
As an active member of the triathlon club our senior sportsperson has promoted Goondiwindi and the Hell of the West event at races all over South East Queensland. During the 2010/2011 tri season our sportsperson gained selection in the Australian team for the world championships in Beijing.
Through dedication to the sport of triathlon our recipient managed to finish 14th in Beijing and in doing so was the first Australian home in his age group. He has been selected onto the Triathlon Qld Technical Committee for the 2011/2012 season to help improve the running of the state organisation and to officiate at events such as Noosa, Mooloolaba, Cairns challenge ironman and various Gold Coast races.
He has been an active member for junior rugby league for the past 11 years and has coached several different grades throughout the years along with gaining a referee certificate. He referees both junior and senior rugby league games through the football season.
The Goondiwindi Regional Council 2012 Senior Sportsperson of the Year Award is presented to Micheal Wise.
The junior sports award is presented to a young individual who has excelled in either their chosen sport or a range of sporting activities. This year’s recipient has made significant contributions and achievements across a number of sports.
Our junior sportsperson has represented the Darling Downs in cross-country, athletics and orienteering. In athletics she represented the region in the 1500 and 3000m, coming 9th in the finals.
As part of the Queensland Interschool Equestrian Association our junior sportsperson was called as a reserve for the Queensland team in Showman however couldn’t compete because of being committed to the Queensland Orienteering Team for the Australian Championships.
As part of the Queensland Orienteering Team she has been successful whilst competing in the following events, Oceania Carnival with a first and third, Australian New Zealand Challenge with a first and fifth and the Australian Schools relay with second.
Our Junior Sportsperson is a recipient of the esteemed Pierre De Courbetin Award from the Queensland Olympic Council, awarded to a student who, through their participation in sport, demonstrates attributes of fair play and respect for others. Our recipient has been an associate with Riding for the Disabled for the past 3 years. The Goondiwindi Regional Council 2012 Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award is presented to Cassandra Heaslip.
The Goondiwindi Regional Council 2012 Young Citizen of the Year Award is presented to a young person under the age of 27 who has made a noteworthy contribution to the local community through outstanding service.
Our Young Citizen was nominated for her service to a number of community groups. She has been a member of APEX for the past several years and a treasurer for the last 2 years. She has also been a member and secretary for the Goondiwindi Motor Club for 6 years. She provides an example to others in her age bracket by contributing her time to help many community based organisations. She gives her personal time to sell raffle tickets for APEX on weekends and has worked at “Gourmet in Gundy”, Goondiwindi B&S and Goondiwindi Kindergarten Progressive Dinner to name a few.
In her role as Manager of the Subway restaurant she provides work and training and acts as a mentor for the younger community members looking to get a start.
It gives me great pleasure to acknowledge her community involvement by presenting the Goondiwindi Regional Council 2012 Young Citizen of the Year Award to Tania Wardle.
There are many community organisations around town that are worthy enough to warrant some distinction from their peers, and with the Group / Community Event Award, we would like to recognize one of the groups actively supporting our community.
This group is a volunteer organisation made up of local people who have volunteered to prepare themselves and their communities to minimise the effects of a disaster. As a member they are called up to actively contribute during disasters and emergencies locally, statewide and nationally.
Under the motto, "Be Aware", the basic concept of this group is to encourage self-help and mutual assistance within each community, they support the statutory services (Police, Fire and Ambulance) where an emergency or disaster is beyond the resources of those services.
During the January 2011 flood event they provided a non-stop performance in excess of two weeks involving themselves in rescue work, community liaison, transport of Queensland Ambulance Service over flooded creeks, traffic control at flooded roadways and assisting the Queensland Police Service.
This group of dedicated and loyal volunteers provides other assistance throughout the year at any time of the day and night.
It is with great pleasure I present the Goondiwindi Regional Council 2012 Group / Community Event of the Year Award to the Goondiwindi State Emergency Service.
NEXT week: Inglewood and Texas winners.
