True-blue and proud to be an Ausssie

02 Feb, 2011 01:23 PM
THE annual Australia Day celebrations in the Town Park attracted a good crowd despite the oppressive heat.

It’s just a sign of how keen we are to celebrate being Australian, Goondiwindi Regional Mayor, Cr Graeme Scheu said.

He sang the praises of all the annual winners. So inspired was he that he later grabbed a guitar to sing a remarkably good rendition of ‘The Goondiwindi Grey’.

The winners and what Cr Scheu said about them:

Citizen of the Year

The Goondiwindi Regional Council 2011 Citizen of the Year Award was presented to a resident of the Council area who has made a noteworthy contribution to the community through outstanding service. This year’s recipient is certainly no exception to the criteria.

Our Citizen was nominated for his community service with Rotary (elected twice as president), his inaugural presidency of Goondiwindi District Promotions (GDP), his work as ground steward of the Goondiwindi Show Society, a former Councillor of the Waggamba Shire and also the first member of the Main Street Committee. He has also been Financial President of the Bowls Club and a member of the Golf Club and R.S.L.

A local business owner, he is more then happy to lend his support to many community events and charities around town. Locally born and bred, our Citizen is always on call to lend a helping hand, participating in events to help and benefit the town such as ANZAC Day, Australia Day, Hell of The West and the Spring Festival just to name a few.

It gives me great pleasure to acknowledge the hard work and dedication to this community by presenting the Goondiwindi Regional Council 2011 Citizen of the Year Award to George Sloss.

Young Citizen

The 2011 Young citizen of the year recipient is an incredibly community minded person who goes out of her way to make sure that new people to our town feel welcome and supported. The dedication she shows in making others lives easier and more fulfilled is an outstanding attribute.

Our Young Citizen is extremely supportive of all local community events and can be found happily volunteering her time or participating with great enthusiasm. She can always be counted upon to get the job done.

She is an active member of the “Cocktails by the River”, the Cancer Fundraising Committee, a coach for the Macintyre Zone basketball team and also a strong supporter of junior basketball in Goondiwindi. She is deeply involved with St Mary’s Parish through Family Masses which target primary aged children, and helping out at parish events throughout the year..

It gives me great pleasure to present the Goondiwindi Regional Council 2011 Young Citizen of the Year Award to this community minded young woman, Tenille Wright.

Senior Sport Star

The Senior Sportsperson of the Year for 2011 has excelled in his chosen sports of cricket and athletics.

Last year he represented Toowoomba Grammar in the 1st XI (first eleven) cricket team where they placed 2nd over all in the highly competitive Greater Public Schools (GPS) competition, during which he averaged 20.6 with the ball and 92 with the bat. His performance during the season resulted in his selection in the Queensland GPS Schools 1st XI.

He also represented Darling Downs open schoolboys’ team in October.

In the same month he was selected in the Darling Downs Country U19 team which went on to win the South Queensland Division Trophy for the first time. From that carnival he was again selected to play for the South Queensland U19 team to play the North Queensland U19 team at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

Our recipient was also successful in Athletics at Toowoomba Grammar where he won Open Age Champion and was named Captain of Athletics for 2010. He then competed at the Darling Downs level in the 100m, 200m, and 400m where he placed first in all three events. His times in those three events allowed him to qualify for the State Championships in Brisbane where he progressed to the final in all of his three events in which he won bronze in the 100m and 400m, and silver in the 200m.

He was the recipient of the Toowoomba Grammar Schools Most Outstanding Sportsman Award in 2010.

Currently a member of the Goondiwindi Colts cricket club, the Goondiwindi Regional Council 2011 Senior Sportsperson of the year is

Sean Cairns.
