MORE than 70 Year 12 Goondiwindi State High School students have taken their first steps towards increasing their awareness about alcohol when they undertook Responsible Service of Alcohol training at Goondiwindi Training and Technology recently.
The training is part of the novel and interactive ‘Think the Drink’ program which has proven to be a successful strategy in helping future consumers make more informed decisions about their responsibilities and behaviours when consuming alcohol.
Goondiwindi Training and Technology Executive Officer Esme Cairns said the Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate not only teaches awareness about alcohol but opens the way for future employment opportunities.
“The students increase their knowledge of licensing laws and regulations, and assessing intoxication and refusal of service requirements which upon completion provides them with certification from Queensland Liquor Licensing that will allow them to gain employment in the industry,” Esme said.
“From the industry’s point of view the program educates future patrons and provides them with a pool of accredited employees they can access to work in their establishments.”
The students will visit a number of licensed premises in Goondiwindi in August to participate in activities that will teach them standard drink measurements, the harmful effects of binge drinking, law enforcement, rights and roles of security officers and taxi etiquette.
The program which was devised by the Goondiwindi Liquor Accord in 2007, has received enormous recognition from the Queensland Governments Liquor Licensing Division for the significant benefits it has in resolving liquor-related issues in local areas.
