WOMEN from all walks of life came together on Monday to celebrate Pink Ribbon Day and raise valuable funds for breast cancer research.
By planting a pink lady in the garden at the Golden Age Centre, these women were commemorating those loved ones that are no longer with them, supporting those who are in the battle of their lives and celebrating the lives of those that have survived breast cancer.
A review released on Monday by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare showed the number of Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer annually had more than doubled over the past 25 years but fewer were dying from the disease.
The number of breast cancer-related deaths fell by 27percent between 1994 and 2006, with only 22 fatalities per 100,000 women.
The report stated that much of the increase was due to a growing and ageing population.
The drop in the death rate was due to an increase in the awareness of the disease and women taking early precautions by having regular mamograms.
