BORDER Builders has been named the National Mitre 10 Store of the Year at a ceremony at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.
The store has been part of Goondiwindi for almost 60 years, and its perfect score for customer service will come as no surprise to local shoppers.
Alwyn, Patrea, and Matthew Bauman are thrilled to have received the recognition.
“We would like to thank our dedicated team, our management, and all our staff, who do a great job at providing ‘mighty helpful’ advice, and first-class customer service,” said Matthew Bauman.
“They are the forefront of our business, and the reason for our success. Without all their combined hard work we would not have been able to be the best in Australia,” Matthew said.
“Many of our staff have been with us for a very long time, some up to 30 years and we thank them for their loyalty and dedication.
“Also we would like to thank the local community for their support by shopping locally. You, the customer, have enabled us to stay at the front of the pack in a year which has been very challenging for retailers,” Mr Bauman said.
Let’s take a walk down memory lane.
It’s been almost 60 years since Border Builders opened its doors to the public.
It all began when two Goondiwindi locals Bede Byrne and Ross Noud put an idea into action and came up with a business venture that would see them through three family generations.
Bede was a local plumber and Ross, a local builder.
Together with their wives they formed a partnership and business that would grow into a prosperous family heirloom.
It was their dream to establish an independent retail hardware store.
On May 12, 1953 Border Builder and Plumber Supplies began trading from rental premises at 107 Marshall Street.
In 1960 the business moved to its present address at 119 Marshall Street, where the freehold was purchased.
Eight years later, John Byrne, Bede and Enid’s son, completed his apprenticeship as a plumber.
Gary Noud, the son of Ross and Reta, finished his apprenticeship as a builder.
The two sons joined their fathers to provide further service to Goondiwindi.
In the 70s, Border Builders and Plumbers Supplies changed from independent purchasing and joined the Mitre 10 buying group.
Sadly, Bede passed away after a long fight with cancer in 1985.
John assumed the control of the Byrne share of the business and from this time both John and Gary continued the partnership into the second generation.
Only six years later Gary passed away after suffering a severe asthma attack.
For the next 12 months Ross Noud steped in. At the end of 1991 he offered his family share to John.
Less than a year on, the Nouds’ share of the business was sold to Alwyn and Patrea Bauman - Patrea was Bede’s daughter and John’s sister.
On July 1, 1997 the Bauman family (Alwyn, Patrea, Jeffrey and Matthew) assumed total ownership of Border Builders Mitre 10.
They haven’t looked back since.
