THE Goondiwindi Local Charity Dance Group is all about having fun, staying fit and healthy and helping the local community.
At least that’s the offical message from self-confesed dance “nut” and group president Harry Roper.
Unoffically, it’s all about hiting the dance floor.
“I love it,” says Harry and he’s not the only one.
Trish Brosnan has been dancing since 1988.
She began when dance instructor Jack Temple travelled throughout the region giving lessons.
At the time she lived in Nindigully.
She and Harry both urge anyone who is interested in dancing or just meeting new people.
“They won’t be sorry,” Harry said.
And for many reasons.
Medical research recently recommended dance as the number one way to stave off Alzheimer’s and many other medical conditions.
“It’s the mix of physical activity and concentration needed to remember the steps,” Harry said.
The aim of the group is to arrange monthly Old Time and New Vogue dances at the Golden Age Centre for the enjoyment of everyone and to raise money for the benefit of Goondiwindi charities.
The first dance was in August 2009 and up to the end of November 2009 the Dance Group had a balance of $868.
“It was difficult to choose a single charity from the many who so desperately need help at this particular time of the year but the general consensus was that Goondiwindi Meals on Wheels Inc. was the popular choice as the recipient of $500 donation,” he said.
“Meals on Wheels almost exclusively operates with the generosity of volunteers and support from the commercial community. They selflessly give of themselves, their time, energy and good will in the supply of meals to those in our ageing community giving them independence and dignity.
“The contribution of the volunteers and supporters of Meals on Wheels cannot be understated,” he said.
On Tuesday, December 8, the Local Charity Dancers handed the sum of $500 to Mrs Pam Clayton, treasurer of Goondiwindi Meals on Wheels Inc.
The Local Charity Dancers are most grateful for the regular support from the Goondiwindi Co-operative Society and Ian and Jan Butters of the Railway Hotel in the provision of raffles and prizes.
A special thanks to the Regional Council in making the Golden Age Centre available and for the preparation of the dance floor, which is always presented in perfect condition. The Goondiwindi Dancer’s appreciate the regular support from friends in Inglewood, Yelarbon, Texas, Goombungee, Boggabilla and Yetman. Without their support and co-operation there would be no dances and as a result no donation.
“We would welcome new faces, young or old to enjoy the dance evenings with us.
“There have been a number of inquiries about dance classes. In the new year we will be trying to arrange classes,” Harry said.
In 2010 dances will be held every second month beginnning in February.
