Forget the Big Pineapple, we have, ‘the Big Sing’

30 Apr, 2009 12:09 PM
THERE’S the big pineapple, the big prawn, the big sheep but Goondiwindi is about to do much better than that, it’s gearing up for the Big Sing.

Community choirs from throughout southeast Queensland will descend on Goondiwindi in a few weeks time for one reason, a musical celebration.

On Saturday May 9 Dr James Cuskelly, the co-ordinator of Music Education and Aural Studies from the School of Music, University of Queensland will conduct several workshops.

Choirs will have the opportunity to build on their choral techniques and musicality, which will culminate in a concert at the community centre on Saturday night.

Individual choirs will perform two or three pieces of their own repertoire and the concert will conclude with the four or five massed choir songs that have been learnt through the day.

The workshop is open to any choir and any individual that isn’t a choir member but that would like to “give it a go.”

Organizer Paddy Martin said that it was not necessary to be able to read music as the massed choir pieces are taught by aural techniques.

The workshop starts at 9a.m. and finishes at 5pm with the concert scheduled for a 6pm start.

Registration is at 8a.m at the Community Centre, $25 for adults and $10 for students.

“Pre-registration would be preferred to help with catering but it’s not essential.

“Morning tea and lunch will be provided by Goondiwindi Performing Arts group and workshop participants and families will be congregating at the Victoria Hotel after the concert for an evening meal and probably some more celebrating,” Paddy said.
