Goondiwindi Regional Council’s Citizen of the Year is Deputy Principal of Goondiwindi State Primary School, Lew Verney.
As Emcee of the Awards Ceremony, Lew was very nearly in the unusual position of having to present himself with a prize. It’s a wonder it hasn’t happened before.
Cr Phil Percival did the honours.
Since Lew arrived in town in 1992, he’s become one of Goondiwindi’s most familiar faces – and voices.
His technical ability and experience with lighting and sound equipment is widely sought-after.
But it’s his ability behind the microphone that has made him the Voice of Goondiwindi.
He’s been the announcer at the Hell of the West Triathlon, the Goondiwindi Apex Eisteddford and Rotary’s Australia Day Breakfast in the Town Park.
He’s been the Emcee for the Combined Churches Easter service, the opening of the new Civic Centre/Cinema, the Macintyre Young Writers awards and the Brain Drain and he is compere at Gourmet in Gundy every year. Lew has been a member of Performing Arts almost since he arrived in Goondiwindi.
He has volunteered his equipment and technical abilities for many great shows, including Beyond Black Tie Ball, Up Close and Personal, Steel Magnolias and Secret Bridesmaid’s Business.
“He is always willing to volunteer his knowledge, experience and time to the community, either through Rotary or any other organisation that asks for his help,” said Goondiwindi Rotary Club’s John Souter.
Lew has been President, Vice-President and Secretary of Rotary, and Spring Festival Director.
This year, Lew has worked hard participating in fund-raising activites to help the High School students get to Gallipoli in March this year.
Lew is also making the trip with his youngest son.
He is a man who can always be relied on to lend a hand and is admired for his even-temper and sense of humour.
He’s a worthy winner and a great bloke. Well done, and well-deserved, Lew.
